Shortcomings of working from home

2020 has been such a devastating year. Both Malaysia and Singapore plunged into unprecedented economic recession unseen in decades. Companies encourage staff to work from home (WFH) in an attempt to reduce number of people commuting to and from work so as to reduce the infection chain of Covid-19.

For office workers who have gotten used to commuting daily, they find it fantastic to turn on laptop and log onto their company system at 8am or 9am to replace physical check-in at office. Which saves a lot of time commuting before and after working hours. In the past we used to set alarm clock to get up at 6am or 7am to rush to workplace. And now, we can wake up at 7:55am, turn on the computer, check into the working platform before cleaning ourselves and enjoying breakfast. We can take the work slowly because we need not spend time on commuting when WFH.

It was good initially. But as WFH strectches longer and longer, we might find our work efficiency to have been lowered. This could be attributed to a comfortable stay at home. You might feel like eating something and drinking tea. And you might touch a bit of household chore after lunch, and not forgetting a short evening nap. In other words, your work seems to be sporadic and you might feel complacent after a long period of WFH.

To deter such complacency, it is a good idea to work at a cafe or co-working space once or twice every week. Enjoy a cup of coffee after lunch and complete the main project of the day within three hours. This must be a more efficient way to get things done.
